The Portable Accessibility Toolkit

Download Access Tools

There are currently two versions of Access Tools available: one for Windows XP and earlier, and one for Windows Vista/7/8. To download either version of Access Tools, please agree to the terms and conditions below, and then click the relevant download button.

Terms and Conditions

Downloads are checked for viruses at the time of their publication. The software applications that comprise Access Tools are distributed by the University of Southampton "as is" and any express or implied warranties, including, but not limited to, fitness for a particular purpose are disclaimed. In no event shall the University of Southampton be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, exemplary, or consequential damages (including, but not limited to, loss of use, data, or profits; or business interruption) however caused and on any theory of liability, whether in contract, strict liability, or tort (including negligence or otherwise) arising in any way out of the use of these applications, even if advised of the possibility of such damage. By selecting 'I Agree' and clicking Download you accept these terms and conditions.

Windows Vista/7/8 Version

This version of Access Tools will run on newer versions of Windows. Instructions are available for a guide on how to setup and use the system.

Two packages are available for this version: a 'basic' version which contains only the Access Tools menu and allows you to download just the applications you want; and the 'full' version which includes all the applications such as a screenreader, magnifier and web browser. Please note the full version is a large file and may take a while to download and setup.

Please ensure you have accepted the terms and conditions above before downloading.

Windows XP Version

For older copies of Windows and for computers that may not have a .NET runtime installed, there is an alternative version of Access Tools. This provides additional features such as an introductory setup wizard and multiple languages, and is written in and includes Java so no .NET runtime is required. A Java runtime is included in this package, and will be used regardless of what computer you use it on. This means that it will run on any Windows PC, whether it has Java installed or not.

Note: This version will run on newer versions of Windows, but will be unable to download and install new applications. You can manually add new applications to the pendrive, or set it up using an older machine, and then the applications should be available on newer computers.

Please ensure you have accepted the terms and conditions above before downloading.

Setup Instructions

When the files have downloaded, unzip them to the root directory of an empty USB pen-drive. This will ensure that file pathnames are constant throughout your testing experience, and provides the simplest way to test the menu.

The portable applications we have selected may be downloaded from the Access Tools download page - more are available from EduApps.

If you do not have an empty pen-drive available unzip the files to an empty folder on your computer. This folder must be called accessTools. Please note the lowercase 'a' although an uppercase 'a' may work. You can run the programs from this location, similar to use on an actual pen-drive.
